Year 6 Art

Term 1

This term year 6 have been busy producing art based on the work of the artist William Morris. They researched the main themes of his work and then had to design wallpaper based around the features of his work. They had to consider if they would like to put a modern twist on their design or keep it more traditional. Finally they had a go at creating a 3D picture incorporating their wallpaper into the room of a house and then evaluated their work. We think they all did an excellent job. Well done Year 6!

Term 2

Year 6 have been learning about the Victorians and have been reading ‘The Tell Tale Heart’ by Edgar Allan Poe. In art we watched a short video clip showing the story and talked about how the emotions are portrayed and how suspense was built up. We then looked at the illustrations from by Harry Clarke and did our own research in order to help us create some of our own designs. Finally we used scratchboards in order to create our own illustrations of the story.

Term 3

Year 6 have been learning about World War 1. They were challenged to produce a piece of work based on WW1 that they can enter into the Turner Contemporary’s ‘Art Rebels’ Competition. They looked at artists who experienced World War 1 themselves and then had to plan their own WW1 scene for a painting. Once their paintings were completed they then sliced up their artwork and looked at different compositions for it, finally sticking them back together in a different way. Some of the children asked if they could weave their work back together and so worked on this technique instead. They produced some very interesting works of art!

Term 4

This term year 6 have been studying World War 2 and learning about the life of Anne Frank. In art the children researched blackout poetry. They then had to design their own art based around Anne Frank and her diary.
First they chose extracts from Anne Frank’s diary, changing the size and font on the laptops and they then had to decide which words to keep and which ones to hide and draw a suitable design for their work. They looked at the official website of Anne Frank’s House to help them with their designs.
Finally they created their blackout diary art and evaluated their work, thinking about what they main message in their artwork was.

Term 5 and 6

Year 6 worked in teams to research some artists who make sculptures using willow such as Caroline Gregson and Laura Ellen Bacon. They discussed the similarities and differences with their work. They then had to design and make their own woodland animal sculptures and decide how to display them in our woodland area. We had a super selection of animals including a spider, rabbit, mole, snail and badger. The children then invited year 1 to come along and view the sculptures. Next year we are starting Forest School and the children using the area will be able to add some more leaves, twigs etc to the sculptures so that they can develop over time!
