From the 2019/20 academic year onwards, schools in England will be required to administer an online Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) to year 4 pupils.
Primary-school children are expected to know all their times tables up to 12 x 12 by the end of Year 4. The purpose of the MTC is to determine whether year 4 pupils can fluently recall their multiplication facts.
The MTC will be delivered in the Summer Term as an online, on-screen digital assessment which will be administered by the class teacher or Maths lead. Pupils are asked to answer 25 questions on times tables from two to 12. They are given six seconds per question, with three seconds rest between each question, so the test should last less than five minutes.
How can I help at home?
At school we follow the National Curriculum and therefore teach the skills required for learning multiplication facts. However additional practice at home will of course support them to become fluent and confident.
