At Senacre Wood Primary School, all children are given great musical experiences and opportunities through specialist teaching from EYFS through to Year 6. We aim to develop a passion for this subject and inspire creativity as they grow in self-confidence. The children will enjoy learning to play different instruments, reading musical notation and learning the importance of musical elements through active games, compositions and successful performances.
EYFS and KS1 will have weekly music lessons. They will gain experience of a variety of musical genres, traditions and cultures with many opportunities to listen to and review recorded music. The children will benefit from lots of practical engagement and be given chances to be as creative as possible when composing and performing. Singing and playing of instruments will be an important focus for each year group to help develop musicianship skills, experiment with producing different sounds and build their confidence in a supportive environment.
Music for KS2 at Senacre has developed over the last few years to introduce whole class instrument teaching to a number of years. This is a great way to teach the fundamentals of music along with the practical skills of learning an instrument, and the essential musical skill of learning to play together in a group. The selected instruments offer great progression routes - from Ukulele in Year 4, guitar in Year 5 and to forming ensembles, looking at music technology and musical theatre in Year 6.
