Maple class have been alternating their ukulele lessons with music curriculum lessons linked to their topic of Ancient Greeks this term. They have been introduced to different repertoire based on the BBC story of the Heroes of Troy and the children have been able to comment on these pieces using musical terminology successfully. The children have gained a better understanding of pitch this term and they were able to identify differences in certain phrases in the song, ‘Is it Love?’ from the Heroes of Troy. They also tried to play varying pitches on their ukuleles reading musical notation on the stave. Year 5 have revisited ukulele hand positions, string names and chord positions this term as well as learning new rest strokes. Through the use of body percussion and rhythmic games, Maple Class are becoming more confident when playing different rhythms and demonstrated this when they performed their own rhythmic compositions to their peers on the ukulele.
