Term 1:
In our maths learning this term, we are focussing on the place value of numbers within 10. We will be practising counting accurately, forwards and backwards, recognising numbers as words and using mathematical language to compare numbers and amounts.
To help your child, you can: practice counting to 10 forwards and backwards and counting objects that you see at home or out and about. You may also find BBC Numberblocks videos useful. We also use use the educational game Numbots
Term 2:
This term, we are learning how to add and subtract numbers within 10. We will begin our journey by talking about the parts and wholes (totals) of practical addition, followed by writing simple number sentences, using the correct symbols. Following this, we will revise the number bonds to 10 that we learnt in EYFS before moving on to subtraction.
To help your child, you can: use objects you may find around your house or in the local environment to begin a conversation around how many there are in each group and how many there are in total, asking simple questions such as ' there were 3 birds in the tree but 1 flew away, how many birds are left?'. These conversation will help your child to apply what they are learning during maths sessions to the world around them.
Term 3:
This term, we are focussing on place value with numbers 10-20. We will be doing lots of counting practice, both forwards and backwards before we begin looking at each of the teen numbers in detail. When looking at each teen number, we will think about how many tens and ones are in each number. Following this, we will remind ourselves how to find one more and one less within 20 and compare and order these numbers.
Term 4:
This term, we will be focussing on addition and subtraction within 20. We will be using various pieces of equipment to help us, with a key focus on how to write number sentences for both addition and subtraction. We will then begin learning numbers up to 50. By the end of this unit, we will be able to count, recognise, write and compare numbers within 50.
