At Senacre Wood Primary, we aim for our MFL curriculum to enable children develop an interest in learning other languages in a way that is enjoyable and stimulating. The main language we learn in KS2 is French, although we also aim to help pupils develop their awareness of cultural differences in other countries around the world.
Using the National Curriculum for MFL, we aim to ensure that all pupils:
Our main aim is that pupils take away positive experiences about learning a new language in the hope that they choose to pursue learning a language later on in their education.
On Tuesday 26th September, we celebrated the European Day of Languages. In our classes, we completed activities that focused on the importance of learning a second language and the opportunities that it can bring to children. We use this day to remind us that learning a language is a step towards openness and respect for other cultures.
In year 3, children discussed the different languages that they could speak in their class whilst year 5 children were studying a country of their choice and exploring useful phrases in those languages. Some classes were even practising some vocabulary using British Sign Language.
