Welcome to your new class- we hope you had a lovely break and we are looking forward to a great first term with you all.
In Ash class this term, we will be reading traditional tales and fairy tales. We will be looking out for the heroes and villains in each story and key story language such as 'once upon a time' and ' happily ever after'.
This term, we will be reading short chapter books by the author Roald Dahl. We will read Fantastic Mr Fox and The Twits. Both of these texts expose the children to rich vocabulary alongside exciting and engaging stories with classic illustrations by Quentin Blake.
If your child enjoys these books, have a look at the book list for other boots that they may enjoy.
This term, we will be reading the classic story 'The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe' by C.S Lewis. This picture book version will illustrate the beautiful world in which the children visit and the wonderous characters that they meet. The texts rich vocabulary and detailed description will transport us all to the land beyond the wardrobe.
In Year 1, we will be following the Read Write Inc Get Writing scheme for terms 1, 2 and 3. This writing program builds on the skills that we have learnt in EYFS. We are focussing on structuring our sentences correctly and remembering capital letters, full stops and finger spaces. The scheme links with the Read Write Inc phonics scheme that we follow each morning.
In our maths learning this term, we are focussing on the place value of numbers within 10. We will be practising counting accurately, forwards and backwards, recognising numbers as words and using mathematical language to compare numbers and amounts.
To help your child, you can: practice counting to 10 forwards and backwards and counting objects that you see at home or out and about. You may also find BBC Numberblocks videos useful. We also use use the educational game Numbots
This term, we are learning how to add and subtract numbers within 10. We will begin our journey by talking about the parts and wholes (totals) of practical addition, followed by writing simple number sentences, using the correct symbols. Following this, we will revise the number bonds to 10 that we learnt in EYFS before moving on to subtraction.
To help your child, you can: use objects you may find around your house or in the local environment to begin a conversation around how many there are in each group and how many there are in total, asking simple questions such as ' there were 3 birds in the tree but 1 flew away, how many birds are left?'. These conversation will help your child to apply what they are learning during maths sessions to the world around them.
This term, we are focussing on place value with numbers 10-20. We will be doing lots of counting practice, both forwards and backwards before we begin looking at each of the teen numbers in detail. When looking at each teen number, we will think about how many tens and ones are in each number. Following this, we will remind ourselves how to find one more and one less within 20 and compare and order these numbers.
