WELCOME TO RECEPTION OAK CLASS
On this page, you will get updates about your child's learning journey, and get snapshots on what our day looks like in Oak class. These pages will be updated termly.
The first few weeks of your child's learning journey, is all about settling them into their new environment, and getting used to school life. This term, we will be undertaking a series of baseline activities to gain an understanding of your child's starting points. Alongside this, we will be celebrating them, as individuals, whilst getting to know their interests, achievements and memories.

AUTUMN TERMS
The children adore getting immersed into play and spend their choosing time doing a variety of things. In Term 1, we spent lots of time learning about 'ourselves'. Our environment offered many activities in line with this enquiry, such as self-portraits and family trees. As we move into the second term, our focus is what we celebrate at home, as well as learning about other festivals including Diwali. Our classroom is always evolving; we had pumpkins everywhere in October, and our home corner has been decorated for birthday parties, and in December, we will be putting the class Christmas tree up too!
WINTER TERMS
After spending time hearing about the children's Christmas holidays, we started our animal enquiry with the popular story 'Poo in the Zoo!' (we even got to investigate herbivore, omnivore and carnivore playdough poo!) Term 3 will continue with the theme of 'Amazing Animal Adventures'. The environment will also evolve based on the children's interests, such as minecraft maps and creepers to find!
Term 1
This term, we will be exploring our new classroom, which includes our vast writing environment! We get to explore a range of writing tools, such as chunky chalk, paintbrushes, marker pens, and clipboards galore!
Our focus is getting to know one another and ourselves, which will be supported by some wonderful texts, including 'Who Are You?'
TERM 2
During enquiry of 'Celebrate Together', Oak class have shared some wonderful texts, including 'Binny's Diwali' and 'Little Glow'. We also listened to a story about T-Rex crashing a birthday party - he didn't even have an invitation!
Our environment is full of writing tools, but the children have loved practising their names on invitations and birthday cards.
Term 3
The key theme of the books we explore this term is 'animals', and how particular animal characters help us build on important behaviours. 'The Koala Who Could' will be helping the children in Oak class to understand what it means to be brave, and the little mouse in 'The Lion Inside' explores themes of curiosity and resilience.
This animal enquiry will enable us to explore a different genre of writing, as we create group fact sheets, as we learn about different animals in our world.
EYFS Maths Long Term Plan 25 26
Term 1
Maths is embedded everywhere in our wonderful learning environment, from dishing up food in the home corner, to filling up buckets for the sand pit!
In Term 1, we will be undertaking a range of baseline activities, such as numeral recognition, 1:1 correspondence with counting and creating patterns. These activities are designed to best support your child in their maths learning. All activities will be engaging, hands- on and practical.
Term 2
This term, we have been learning about the composition of numbers, with help from our friends 'Numberblocks'. This has helped us to understand simple number facts and bonds, such as 1+1= 2, and that 4 can be made of 4 ones, 2 twos, or a 3+1!
Our birthday home corner is number rich, with birthday candles and badges! This has also enabled us to think about one more of numbers.
Term 3
This term started with a focus of measurement and size, as we looked at different animal sizes, including tall giraffes and tiny harvest mice! We put these skills into practice by making animal enclosures out of construction, inspired by the familiar text 'Dear Zoo'.
We are also building on our addition and subtraction skills, by solving word problems where the children practise adding more to groups and taking away too.
TERM 1
Our main focus is getting to know the children; their families, all about their holidays and favourite memories. This allows us to start exploring the concept of 'Growing Up', and start thinking about how we have changed. Alongside this, we will be discussing where children have been, and finding them on a map of our big, vast world. As well as different places, we will also be exploring our local community, and what it has to offer.
As the seasons change, we will be exploring and playing with lots of different seasonal objects, including beautifully coloured leaves, shiny conkers and different sized acorns!
TErm 2
Our enquiry of 'celebrations' is helping us to learn about different communities and cultures. In class, we have been thinking about the similarities, including special food, decorations, and presents.
The children have loved getting stuck in with messy play! Our new puddle suits mean we can jump in puddles no matter the weather - thank you PFA!
Term 3
Our outdoor classroom has enabled the pupils to think about seasonal change, through discussions about bare trees, frosty surfaces, and sloppy, muddy puddles, we are grasping a good understanding about what to expect during a typical British winter.
This term's teacher directed focus will be learning about different animals around the world, and their habitats. The children are going to tap into their curious minds and have the time to consider what they want to learn about animals, such as learning about the fastest animals in the world!
TERM 1
Our rich environment offers many different arty activities, which enables the children to create with mixed media and refine their fine motor skills. This term, Oak class will be drawing self portraits, inspired by Smriti Halls 'Who Are You?'; these will be displayed on our art wall in the classroom.
The concept of colour mixing is explored further in the children's art lessons, with Mrs Clarkson.
Term 2
In the art lessons, the pupils have been making firework pictures with Mrs Clarkson (Mrs Austin also let us loose on the glitter too!).
In choosing time, we have made our own version of 'Little Glow' and enjoyed painting candles on birthday cakes.
term 3
As a part of our enquiry 'Amazing Animal Adventures', Mrs Clarkson has been building on the children's artistic skills through creating different animal artwork, including watercolour frogs and fork koala faces!
In our construction area, the children are learning how to draw their designs and consider the different ways to adapt models and buildings.
